Rochester Township trustee Jarvis Babcock filed to challenge state Rep. Bul Taylor in the district that includes parts of Erie Huron and Lorain counties. The Natural Law Party unveiled a 40 some slate with David Kluter and John Fitch running in Lorain County and James M. Cahaney entering a separate race.
A cerebrally palsied man recanted one of the rape charges against Dan Horton Jr. The accuser still says Horton raped him at a Ver Milion group home between late 1994 and January 1995. Horton faces three counts and is scheduled for trial February 16 before Judge Robert Corts. The man also filed a civil suit seeking compensation for mental and emotional suffering.
Carmen de la Cruz 31 of Lorain pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual battery and five counts of corrupting a minor in Elyria. The traveling ministry case involves two teenage boys who toured with her husband Hector de la Cruz, who already pled guilty and received six years in prison for similar abuse between 1989 and 1991.

A day long festival for families is scheduled Saturday February 17 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds. The Watkins family files a $7.5 million lawsuit in Lorain County Common Pleas Court alleging hospital doctors and two insurers denied drug treatment to Gregory Watkins, a 28yearold chronic alcoholic, leading to his suicide on November 22, 1994. Named defendants include Cigna, Connecticut General Life Insurance, Lorain Community/St Joseph Regional Health Center, Northeast Ohio Emergency Affiliates, and Dr Lal Rohira.
