Apollo 9 mission to test moon ship in Earth orbit
Three astronauts James McDivitt David Scott and Russell Schweickart will launch February 28 aboard a Saturn V to prove lunar landing hardware in Earth orbit. The 10 day flight includes a planned two hour spacewalk by Schweickart and tests of two spacecraft operating together for the first time. The mission, dubbed Tin Can Flight, aims to pave the path for Apollo 10 and 11 with Apollo 9 circling the globe about 312 miles up and 15 orbits while practicing lunar module rendezvous and ascent in orbit.
