Welfare recipient must repay savings from welfare era
Maria James, a 52 year old welfare recipient in New York, saved about 6500 dollars from 1973 to 1978 by placing welfare funds in bank accounts for herself and her mentally retarded daughter Mercedes. The city argued she was ineligible for welfare due to assets and filed a lawsuit. A Manhattan Supreme Court justice ordered repayment of the savings and ruled against her.
