Lorain City Hall site eyed for downtown renewal plan

A Lorain City Hall move to a site east of the current building near West Erie Avenue was agreed by a council subcommittee and a site selection group. The area includes a variety store, former Lorain City Lines equipment buildings, a taxi office, and Hotel Herbert. L R Barr, president and general manager of Lear Siegler Inc. Rome o Division in Elyria, is named general campaign chairman for the 1968 Lorain County United Fund drive. The appointment was announced by David R Goldthorpe at a UCS board meeting. The 1948 campaign aims to raise funds for 65 human care agencies in the county in October.

Cuban linked killings raise Guatemala terror drive

In Guatemala City gunmen killed Alfonso Alejos de la Cerda, 77, wounding his driver as police intensified a terror roundup. 12 Die As Air Force Tanker Crashes At Minot Base

MINOT ND AP A four engine tanker on a routine staff visit to Minot Air Force Base crashed on takeoff in heavy fog killing 12 and injuring one survivor. Among the dead are Maj Gen Charles Eisenhart and eight other Air Force officers from March Air Force Base. The survivor, William G Wright, 34, a plane steward, was hospitalized in critical condition with burns. The aircraft was not carrying extra fuel and was not yet airborne when it veered off the runway. Visibility was poor and the cause is under investigation.

Sixteen crewmen battle to save battered Dutch freighter

In a mid Atlantic gale six teen crewmen on a Dutch freighter struggled to stay afloat as huge waves and high winds battered the vessel. The captain postponed an attempted abandon ship at dawn due to snow squalls and poor visibility while the ship listed with its deck awash on the port side. One crewman suffered a serious head wound as winds moderated to about 35 knots.
