Elyria’s League of Women Voters plans to push a referendum to adopt a council manager form of government. A letter read to council says the group will seek ballot placement for a charter commission in November 1955 with aims to have a manager in place by January 1958.
Barricelli Trucking Co. faces opposition from state patrol and locals along routes 10 20 99 and 113 over pay by the trip while drivers with Autocar diesels haul heavy loads between Parkerstown and Cleveland. Barricelli claims persecution by the patrol and asserts he pays only minor overload fines. He notes about 60 trucks and says drivers are union–sent and that arrests since 1951 reflect enforcement rather than misconduct. He defends the pay plan and insists he will run the fleet despite pressure.
Carl Robert Lee, 38, of Cleveland, faces five counts in Lorain Municipal Court after a gravel-hauling operation to a Cleveland outlet. Judge LeRoy Kelly postponed sentencing to Jan. 5 at the defense request. Lee was arrested Dec. 30 on Rt. 6 near Lorain for truck violations, fictitious plates, and evading police.
Harrsburg reports George M. Leader, 31, sworn in as governor at the state capital. The new administration marks a change in Democratic power after 16 years. A related notice notes a cash and carry location at 206 B. Bridge St. remains open for business.

Ten of 22 convicts who revolted and seized five guards as hostages surrendered nearly eight hours later. The rioters demanded a getaway car for the release of their captives, delivering the ultimatum to Warden John J. O'Brien as the Catholic chaplain heard confessions from four of the five captured guards.

Goble of Columbus, director of Selective Service for Ohio, was appointed deputy State Auditor by State Auditor James A. Rhodes. The 62 year old Republican succeeds John M. Wilcoxon, who resigned to become state finance director. Goble will assume Feb 14 and has served in military since 1908 beginning with the Ohio National Guard at 16.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said he invited Dag Hammarskjold to Washington for talks on the detention of American airmen by Red China. Dulles stressed it is premature to judge Hammarskjold's mission successful or failed and noted no conflict with President Eisenhower on the issue.
The Ohio Turnpike Commission awarded 8.46 million dollars in contracts for an operations building and a 16 unit combination restaurant and gas station along the toll road. Shinle-Wolfe Inc. Fremont won 959000 for two buildings, Mosser Construction Co. Fremont 979000 for two buildings. Other awards went to The Jume Co. Lorain 967000, W.B. Gibson Co. Warren 1002000, Campbelt Construction Co. Warren 1349000, and Ben Jean Construction Co. Boston 2140000 for multiple buildings.
