In 2010 Mike Holmgren named Browns president and Hall of Famer Jim Brown declined to join the Ring of Honor ceremony. Brown accused Holmgren of salary cuts amid front office restructuring and fired off a letter alleging racism.
The Browns faced a rare stretch of injuries with three quarterbacks Jake Delhomme Ser 4 Wallace and Col McCoy suffering high ankle sprains. The setback also sidelined punter Dave Zastudil a linebacker D Qwell Jackson for the season and defensive end Robaire Smith plus linebacker Scott Fujita for the final weeks.
In two seasons coach Eric Mangini clashed with disruptive players. He traded Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards in 2009 and released running backs Jerome Harrison and James Davis in 2010 amid complaints about playing time.
Rookie safety T J Ward struck Bengals receiver Jordan Shipley in the head causing a concussion. Steelers linebacker James Harrison knocked out Joshua Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi in the same quarter amid league wide helmet-to-helmet controversy.
The Browns faced disappointment as Joe Thomas earned a fourth straight Pro Bowl nod while no other Browns are anticipated to join him in Hawaii. Alternates exist but appear unlikely to be tapped.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur brings a West Coast offense to Cleveland with Holmgren influence. The change aims for a pass first system though it faces a tough off season without camps. A 3-4 to 4-3 transition will require personnel tweaks and new pieces from GM Tom Heckert.
The offseason expectation is Colt McCoy will start in 2011 after eight starts showing leadership. He finished 2-6 in his last two games, prompting consideration that Kevin Kolb or a draft successor could move him from the job. Browns outlook remains contingent on QB options and coach Pat Shurmur's system.
The firing ends Mangini’s Browns era after a 1-3 record against Pittsburgh and a 2-10 mark in the AFC North. A string of turnovers and a late 75-yard Maurice Jones-Drew screen set up the Jets and Bills games for heartbreak, with players like Hillis enduring fumbles in a season of costly miscues.
Peyton Hillis amasses 1 654 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns making him the Browns MVP. Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Joe Haden, and Scott Fujita round out a standout group anchoring the line and defense with Haden's late-season impact and Fujita captaincy shaping the unit.
A look at the Browns’ underperformers who played notable time in 2010. Shaun Rogers logged 17 tackles in 16 games hampered by injuries and may not return at $5.5 million. John St Clair and others like Brian Schaefering Trusnik Ventrone Royal faced declining effectiveness and heavy pressure.
Browns topple defending Super Bowl champion Saints 30 17 in New Orleans. Peyton Hillis shines with 180 rushing yards and two scoring plays while Colt McCoy drives a rookie era bid. David Bowens and Reggie Hodges highlight a chaotic victory that also hints at Mangini over Belichick.
