Prime rate to keep dropping through March says Amer Trust economist

Amer Trust economist Dan Pavsek predicts the prime rate averaging about 10.25 percent in the first quarter and easing to around 9.75 percent temporarily. Home, business, auto and personal loans may fall, with a potential mild recession later in 1986. He sees modest inflation and gradual growth, plus demand for machine tools and manufactured goods.

Locals cautious on State of State address in Ohio

Officials in City, county, and schools responded with cautious optimism to Gov Richard Celeste’s State of the State address. He spotlighted jobs and education and proposed a $1.9 billion highway program, including I-480 extension and routes 301 to 20. Elyria Mayor Keys called the programs important but noted Elyria cannot fund its $43 million sewage project.

Malone gets life in prison

Elyria report states Douglas Malone pleaded guilty to two of three murders in the 1983 spree and received consecutive life terms. He faces 60 years before parole eligibility and earlier admitted to related robberies and felonious assault alongside brothers Herman and Howard Bittner. The trio connected murders with robberies, arson, vehicle thefts, and a fatal Amherst lounge shootout.

Malone given lengthy sentence for patron shooting

DOUGLAS MALONE received at least 69 years behind bars after shooting a patron in the leg in Lorain County. Prosecutor Gregory White urged reflection on life behind bars for youths, while Kale III commented that nothing more could be done. Malone, shackled, declined to speak as Judge Betleski accepted the substitution for the judge on the case, with White and the defense noting their agreement.

Abby and Ann diverge on tenderness versus sex

Cemetery records altered in plot double sale scandal

Eaton Township officials charged Trustee Donald Wracker and former road superintendent Harry Day after records and a cemetery map at Butternut Ridge Cemetery appeared altered to hide a double sale. Brenda Nubbie faced another plot sold to Nellie-Mae Meecha, who died December 29 and was buried in Nubbie’s grave. Day and others say the map and sale documents were changed or missing, making it hard to prove Day’s map entry.

Local dairies aid in missing children effort

Hillside Dairy of Cleveland will feature missing children notices on milk cartons in the greater Cleveland area. Smith Dairy Products Co of Orrville joins the national Child Find program with four children monthly, two on each carton run, using photos and data from the program’s databank.
