Early morning readings hit 3 below zero with wind chill making it feel much colder. North Ridgeville observer notes 6 am to 10 am cold stretch, then a rise to 2 degrees. Snow flurries possible today with wind from the southwest, brighter periods expected later this week.
A 19 year old Swedish patient at Ostra Genatric Hospital in Malmo confessed to giving a soft drink laced with carbolic acid to 19 elderly ward patients claiming he could not stand to see them suffer. He admitted to others and three more deaths are under investigation with five more patients in intensive care.
A 50 year old woman, Patricia Smithberger of 969 Warwick Dr, was found dead in the rubble after a Sunday morning fire gutted her home in Sheffield Lake. Firefighters arrived about 7 14 a.m. and battled the blaze for almost three hours. The cause is under investigation and a coroner will rule on death. Surviving are her son, Keith, a grandson, two brothers and two sisters. Burial will be at Ridgehill Memorial Park Cemetery. Services set for Wednesday at 10 30 a.m. with Rev Donald Yackle officiating.
In Nuoro, Italy, Giuseppa Delogu, an elderly pensioner, faces a bill from the state electricity board for two kilowatt hours. Officials insist on collection despite the smallest coin being five lire, arguing the law requires all sums due. A social security office says it will pay with a five lire coin and seek four lire in change. Separately, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi will depart Iran for Egypt en route to the United States.
On Martin Luther King Day the state honors the civil rights leader birthday memory and work. Pupils at Hamilton Elementary misstate King’s achievements while noting the holiday.
