Amid a 7.0 magnitude quake the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince lies in chaos with tens of thousands feared dead and many trapped under rubble. U S and international aid rushes to coordinate relief while churches and agencies solicit donations and organize missions to aid survivors and distant orphanages.
In Lorain pastors from Church on the North Coast report 30 children at the church sponsored orphanage in Port au Prince survived the earthquake but slept outside due to aftershocks. Rev. Troy Thompson notes missionaries from Potter's House Church of God in Columbus are there and church members may travel to assist with the Red Cross by feeding and housing displaced residents.
President Barack Obama will hold a town hall for about 1,000 people at Lorain County Community College on January 22 during a county visit. The White House said time and other stops will be released later. The event at the field house aims to discuss jobs and the economy with workers, business leaders, and local officials.
Veteran Elyria police officer Scott Willis, off duty, aided Gates Mills officers in rescuing a 66-year-old woman after a drunken driving crash on November 10 in Gates Mills. He received a certificate for his actions.
The Elyria Holiday Inn at 1825 Lorain Blvd continues operating under receivership since 2009 with BBP Partners and plans to pass control to Real Bank of Plano when a sheriff's sale occurs. The bank seeks proper value, but the property will stay open, with bills and franchise fees paid as the process continues. A sale date has not been set.
