U.S. District Judge Walter J. Labay acquitted James Caesar Petrillo of violating the 1946 Lea Act in a May 1946 strike against Chicago radio station WAAF. The case marked a second failed government bid to convict the AFM president after an earlier dismissal on constitutional grounds.
The 65 foot houseboat Coconut carrying Win ston L. White his son and daughter in law, nine other passengers, and six crew members left Caibarien Cuba for Florida and has not been heard from since. A high speed Southern Railway train struck a stalled Navy crane truck at a grade crossing in Chamblee Georgia injuring five crewmen and derailing ten cars. Passengers suffered bruises but all recovered, with relief trains arranged to continue or return to Atlanta. Earlier in Georgia a Coast Line wreck near Vidock and a Southern derailment near Eastman caused minor injuries.

Ernest Bingelli 23 of Center Ridge Road Ridgeville driver of the telephone company truck and Roy Eschbaugh 63 of Tiffin suffered injuries including shock and a possible fractured knee Mrs Eschbaugh 49 had multiple fractures and chest injuries Emma Baxter 65 of Tiffin suffered possible brain concussion Also W C Gehrke 245 Louisiana Avenue riding in the truck was uninjured Several other accidents were reported due to slick roads including a crash near Eighth Street and at Huron and West streets.

The United States Army air force announced the reopening of its long abandoned wartime air base near Tripoli on the North African coast. The Union Victory carrying 27 survivors of the fire-gutted army transport Joseph V. Connolly arrived at Halifax. Twenty four survivors were sent by airplane to New York and three injured remained hospitalized. The 7176 ton ship was first to return American WWI dead from France after a fierce blaze left 46 aboard. The Gen. RB E Gallan picked up 19 survivors and stood by. An Army tug was sent from New York to tow the burning vessel for salvage. The Connolly carried 5 400 metal caskets and a 1 250 000 cargo.
The Savings Deposit Bank and Trust Co. will hold its annual meeting tomorrow at 9 a.m. to hear reports and elect directors. Elyria Savings and Trust Co. meets January 21 at 1 30 p.m. Lerzin County Savings and Trust Co. gathers January 28 at noon. Service Director Dan W. Kothe warns on road littering with possible prosecutions and police tracing efforts. PAINESVILLE Principal Robert B. Oldfather named acting superintendent of city schools effective February 1, succeeding L. L. Dickey. Rivoli theater advertises The Last Moment starring Robt. Cummings and Susan Hayward.

Rescue crews battled Arctic seas as the coast guard Cedar saved 15 aboard the inter island freighter Aleutian Mail after it ran aground on Unimak Island. A BSP-1927 crew of nine was rescued near King Cove by a fishing vessel from a rubber raft dropped by an Air Force B-17.
