The weather across the nation swung wildly with sub zero blasts and 70 degree warmth. Snow fell in several California cities as Lake Erie bays saw swimmers and cows grazed in green pastures amid varying seasonal conditions.
Marietta Ohio reports an unofficial 95 degrees at noon the warmest January day on record in the city. State Weather Bureau officials in Columbus note widespread warmth across the state and attribute the high reading to sun exposure on thermometers.
A wild weather day across the United States reports record warmth in places like New York and Milwaukee area while snow and cold grip the plains and mountains. Tornadoes floods and stalled trains disrupt drought stricken regions as California sees unseasonal snow and southern cities report light dustings.
The forecast calls for rain tonight and Friday with a possible change to snow in the northern area. Warmer in the southeast, colder in the northwest and extreme north, and a general 36 hour unsettled spell as high pressure shifts eastward from the Upper Mississippi Valley.

Washington January 14. Machinery nears completion to launch the two billion reconstruction program and a separate tax increase. Officials cite a balanced budget and unassailable credit as key to reviving business while Congress debates the reconstruction bill and tax measures.
Stanley Rose, 28, was shot and killed at the Larimore Charles farm 10 miles southwest of Eaton Ohio after an attempted chicken theft. Jack Todd, 28, was captured nearby and jailed. Todd said they were staying at the Akron Hotel Richmond Indiana. Rose’s wife and two children were reported in Berea Kentucky. Todd’s wife and children were with Todd’s in-laws in Montgomery County Ohio.
Elyria approved an appropriation ordinance totaling 446 647 90 for the first six months due to uncertain city income. The general fund totals 147 462 90 including safety, service, health and park departments, with debt retirement sinking fund at 221 075.
Attorney General Bettman telegraphed Secretary Hurley urging that the Lake States be heard before any action on diverting water from the Great Lakes. Bettman has opposed diverting Lake Michigan water by the Chicago sanitary district.
John Wagner longtime Elyria blacksmith passed away at his home 321 Seventh Street aged 76. Born December 22 1855 he learned the trade at fourteen and worked sixty two years with brother Frank retiring a year ago. He leaves wife Mary Katherine nine children seven grandchildren and siblings Frank Fred Emma and Mrs Kemper Mrs Webinger. Funeral at St Marys church Saturday 10:15 burial in St Marys Cemetery.
Police carried out raids on alleged speakeasies and beer resorts in Lima Ohio. Hundreds of bottles of home brew were seized and an anti burglary campaign was launched after a spate of recent break ins including a shoe shop burglary at Gar done and a grocery theft of $60 at Doyle’s store.
In Mount Sterling Kentucky a jury convicted William Hightower Evarts coal mine union president of conspiracy to murder connected to the death of three Harlan County deputy sheriffs in a spring gun clash with miners. He received a life term and was named in the conspiracy to murder Jim Daniels one deputy slain.
George E. Lewis known as Hook Lewis of Elyria announces his candidacy for sheriff of Lorain County as a Democrat at the primaries on May 10. He is a 15 year Lake Terminal Railroad engine service employee and this marks his first political bid.
A Elyria woman mailed a letter via air mail and special delivery to Cologne and it arrived seven days later. The letter traveled from Cleveland to New York by air, then by fast ship across the Atlantic, then a foreign mail plane, with a special delivery courier finishing the final leg. Total cost was 29 cents.
A roundup under Sheriff Clarence Adams yielded six arrests and $150 in fines for overloads up to 17,000 pounds. Deputies Brownsworth and Breagger cited violators as weather allowed road work, with arrestees arraigned before Justice S J George.
John B. Swift, 82, former head of the Eagle-Picker Lead Company and a major figure in American lead industry development, died last night in Cincinnati after years of declining health. He had not revived since June.
The American Lace Company under manager Harry C Weil reports a surge in business after the annual meeting. Orders are arriving and production is being sped up. Weil expects continued activity with on hand orders ready for immediate shipment.

London Ohio January 14 William Eyler aged 13 saved his life by running to a neighbor for help after a .38 caliber cartridge he had been handed by a schoolmate exploded in a fire causing loss of sight in his left eye.
Collier announces his bid for the Republican nomination for sheriff of Lorain County subject to May primaries. Born on a Blyine to Lorain farm, he is a lifelong resident who spent 33 years at The Western Automatic Machine and Screw Company rising from laborer to works manager. He has many county friends, has never held public office, and lives at 332 Columbia Avenue Elyria Ohio.
The Ohio highway planned a spring construction of a 30 foot wide Route 20 by May 1 from Elyria to the Cuyahoga County line. Tracks and ties of the Cleveland Southwestern Railway were to be removed to allow road improvements, with Route 29 already paved and to be extended seven more miles to Elyria.
I L Holderman of Dayton was reelected president of the Ohio Fair Managers Association. M D Urmston of Hamilton was reelected vice president. Don A Detrick of Bellefontaine was reelected executive secretary. W B Richmond of Elsha was elected treasurer. The group approved a resolution urging county commissioners to provide mandatory financial aid to agricultural societies.
Washington January 14 leaders of Republican and Democratic anti prohibition blocs in the house agreed unanimously to seek a congressional vote this session on a proposed constitutional amendment to resubmit the 18th amendment to a popular referendum.
