Century tide mill in East Boothbay keeps Hodgdon family legacy

Passamaquoddy residents recall the tide power mill at East Boothbay that has operated for over a century. Caleb Hodgen of Westport envisioned a tidal storehouse in 1826 and built a mill on a 40 acre pond at the Damariscotta river mouth. The Hodgdon family has continuously owned it, drawing power from tidal waters. The mill helped store ships like the Bowdoin and produces over 100,000 feet of lumber annually, remaining one of Maine’s last active tide mills.
