Natty chimney sweep keeps tradition alive in tough energy era
Edward Belko, a North Ridgeville chimney sweep since 1979, wears a formal black outfit to honor tradition and attract attention while cleaning chimneys. He uses brushes, fiberglass rods, and a powerful vacuum, warning about creosote buildup and fire danger as wood and coal rise in use due to energy costs. Belko combines cleaning work with a job at a Cleveland steel mill and notes wood heat offers energy independence, despite higher water bills from laundering sooty clothes.

Budget delay over senior center funds draws concern
City faced a tight 1981 budget delaying $42,780 in matching funds for a $137,000 senior citizens center addition. Karen Skinner said the city risked losing $45,500 in federal funds if the deadline passed January 31. City officials cited November street levy finances and awaiting county budget figures as causes.
