In Czechoslovakia and Hungary apathy prevails, with Hungarians awaiting gradual change and police-state pressures, while Bulgarians show relative happiness as living standards rise. Poles seek a mixed path with limited free expression, and Yugoslavs mix independence with longing for Western ties and alarm at Tito's treatment. Americans face blame for the 1956 revolution and missed aid to freedom fighters.
