Mr and Mrs Dan McCarty faced the mayor on cruelty charges involving their eight year old daughter Olive Ward. Olive testified of hunger scant clothing and no nightwear while a man named Joy shared her bed triggering cries that woke neighbors. The father was found guilty but sentence awaits the mother’s hearing pending Tuesday.
Springfield endures its worst cold spell in years as coal and gas run scarce. Gas supply is nearly worthless with Abbott Gas Co saying a supply exists only because of 3¢ in Lancaster fields, warning gas could fail within days.
The Royal Neighbors host a rubber social at their hall Thursday evening January 15. Bring friends and old rubbers for a chance to win a course prize awarded to the guest bringing the most old rubbers. A social event with the Modern Woodmen also invited.
The revival at the Church of Christ drew growing interest despite low temperatures. Mr Huston’s hymn moved listeners while Mr Sala discussed the Fall and Rise of Man citing temptation by Satan. Kansas City January 13 at the National Live Stock Association annual session President Springer created a stir by attacking the interstate commerce law. He mocked the five commissioners system and cited a Missouri justice of the peace who ruled a federal statute unconstitutional. He also condemned the proposed packing house merger as a danger to fair play.
Henry P. Moulton the U S attorney in Boston has appointed William H. Lewis a colored lawyer long known as Harvard football center as an assistant U S district attorney. The move is seen by some as a response to Southern states questioning northern negro appointments. Trustees of the Old Ladies Home plan a meeting at Mrs Parks Fosters on Monday at 2 pm.
In Chicago markets dated Jan 18 cattle at 6500, a drop of 10 cents. hogs at 32000 active, down 10 cents. sheep around 10000 opened strong, settled 10 to 15 cents lower. Earlier reports from Liberty Pennsylvania show cattle fair, slow. hogs 30 double decks active. May wheat and corn values noted in Chicago Oklahoma summaries with January pork at 17.88.
