Cleveland woman shoots intruder after police delay

A 67 year old Cleveland woman says she shot and killed David Strickland 21 after police failed to respond to her first call for help. Strickland died early Friday. another 21 year old man was arrested. The prosecutor will decide on the shooting.

New prison could double in size

State Senator Alan Zaleski said Lorain County has an 80 percent chance to gain 500 additional beds for the Eaton Township prison, boosting payroll and jobs. The plan envisions a 1000 bed to 1500 bed facility with a decentralized campus style, with construction possible by December if drawn. Residents raised concerns on fire protection and ambulance service and will join design input and advisory processes.

Reagan won’t back freeze on social security increases

Treasury Secretary Regan said the White House will not help Congress freeze social security cost of living adjustments to cut deficits. Ford to lay off 110 workers at Lorain and Avon Lake plants

Ford Motor Co will lay off 90 workers at the Lorain Assembly Plant and 20 at the Avon Lake Truck Plant effective Monday. The layoffs follow a seasonal staffing pattern after last summer hires filled in for vacations and reduced vacation time and absenteeism. The Lorain plant recently shifted to 10 hour shifts for the first time since last summer.

Steelworkers call back 150 at Lorain plant needs

Steel will recall 150 workers beginning Monday as orders for pipe rise. This marks the third callback in three weeks. A second shift is added in the rolling mill and a third shift for the continuous caster. No. 2 Seamless mill resumes, Basic Oxygen Process furnace goes 24 hours, and a third shift starts next week. This follows 80 workers recalled this week and 70 last week after No. 1 blast furnace went back online after six months.

Sentencing Wednesday for Malone after guilty plea

Douglas P. Malone, 28, pleads guilty to two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, and one felonious assault at a late Friday hearing in Lorain County. He faces life on murder counts plus mandatory gun specifications totaling up to 52 years to serve before parole if run consecutively.
