Church avoids auction after city loan rescue
Lorain’s Compassion Missionary Baptist Church at 520 W 22nd St faced a January sheriff sale over about 128,800 dollars in back taxes on the church, two vacant lots, and the pastor’s home. A 26,800 dollar loan from the Lorain Community Development Department covered taxes and court costs, with the balance paid after tax-exempt status paperwork. The 30-year loan aims to stabilize the neighborhood, following prior city assistance in 1993 to acquire land for construction.
