Avon Lake man convicted in theft case
Joseph Chavez, 46, was convicted on two counts of receiving stolen property and one count of possessing a weapon with a criminal record for breaking into his girlfriend’s condominium and giving jewelry and a gun to crack cocaine users and prostitutes. Sentencing set for Tuesday.

Union Sign Workers Strike Over Pension Terms
Wagner Electric Sign Co workers from Local 639 International Painters and Allied Trades walked off on a cold Friday over pension benefits. The four year contract expired in July with 16 members and no agreement since. Shop steward Joe Phillips says the company reneged on counting all hours toward the pension fund, paying only 40 hours, while Mark Wagner declined to comment. Union members stood in wind and snow, ready to return if a contract is signed.

Elyria County commissioner Ber Blair was unanimously elected president of the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency NOACA, which disburses federal transportation funds for Lorain, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Medina counties and oversees regional planning and air and water quality. Blair aims to push stalled commuter rail and previously saw I 90 widening approved in 1996. Students moved by percussionist's beats at St Marys school
Elyria St Mary's School hosted London Symphony Orchestra percussionist Ray Northcott. About 400 students chanted louder as he banged cymbals, then demonstrated soft playing and the importance of practice. New Oberlin Postmaster Reaches Career Milestone
Yun, the new Oberlin postmaster, marks 19 years in the postal service and a career spanning Midpark to Sheffield Lake. She began as a letter carrier in 1984, rose to office supervisor in 1988, and served as Sheffield Lake branch manager by 1995 before taking the Oberlin postmaster role.
