Allen Bowen 22 of 145 Sheriff Si Elyria died early today after smoke overpowered him in a kitchen fire that spread to the living room. Bowen’s wife Anita escaped, neighbors recalled hearing shouts as firemen found him on the living room floor at about 4 30 a m. Bowen born Oct 24 1958 was a lifelong Elyria resident, enrolled in CETA classes at Lorain Community College, and had worked at Tappan Co. plant. Survived by wife, brothers David Michael Martin all of Elyria, sister Cheryl of Elyria, and grandmother Elizabeth Bowen Hamilton Ontario. At his Senate confirmation hearing Haig urged consistency reliability and balance in policy stressing deterrence including nuclear power if challenged He warned against overreliance on peace and cited Carter Camp David as a significant diplomatic achievement while criticizing weak Western responses to Afghanistan 1978 and urging revived linkage with the Soviet Union.
Discussions on freezing and transferring Iranian assets into an Algerian escrow intensify as negotiators seek a deal to free hostages before January 20. Estimates of the frozen assets vary from 6.5 to 14 billion dollars, with reports of up to 16 billion in escrow. Jeffery Stwan, 21, of 237 Fairfax Road, died at Lorain Community Hospital after his head struck a guy wire while riding a snowmobile operated by Patrick Shullick, 21. The incident occurred on Liberty Street near Romp's Marina as both men wore helmets. Stwan died 45 minutes after rescue arrival. coroner to rule on cause of death.
