Snowstorm Closes Schools Grinds Roads Across Area

Severe snowstorm snarled travel and shut most area schools with 5 to 11 inches of fresh snow and high winds. Forecasters warned of worse conditions tonight with up to 10 more inches possible and wind chills well below zero. Police reported hazardous driving, drifting and several slide offs. parking bans were in effect to aid plows.

Explosion at Green Springs gas plant shuts from production

A blast at Columbia Gas of Ohio synthetic gas plant in Green Springs Seneca County forced its closure. The facility produced up to 200 million cubic feet daily and the explosion narrows the already tight gas supply situation. A Columbia spokesman cited a flare line as the likely origin while two billion cubic feet of gas from industries and institutions was slated for release between now and March.

Winter storm warning brings heavy snow and wind

A winter storm warning is in effect today and tonight as snow accumulates. Expect significant blowing and drifting with 6 to 10 inches by tonight and a 60 percent chance of precipitation. Temperatures will reach the upper 20s, dropping to around 5 above tonight. Tomorrow remains cold with mainly cloudy skies and possible snow flurries, highs near 15.

Edison rate hike eyed for northern Ohio cities

Ohio Edison seeks a 25 percent rate increase in Elita Lorain and 20 other northern Ohio communities pending PUCO approval. The staff recommends about 41 million dollars in additional revenue, below the company’s original request of roughly 58 million. Cities argue a 32 million plan is unwarranted, while Edison says the rise is needed to cover inflation and fund future facilities. The PUCO considers the case with a decision likely within weeks to a month.

City funds shifted to cover bounced payroll checks

Auditor Thomas M Radican ordered transfer of funds after a bank refused to cash city payroll checks. The delay stemmed from a Friday bank closure and a dispute with Mayor Marguerite E Bowman over accounting. About $274,000 was needed for 605 employees. A transfer delay followed a funeral, with Buckeye County agencies noting improper use of funds.

Israel seeks extradition of Munich Olympics mastermind Abu Daoud

French police say Abu Daoud, alleged mastermind of the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre, is sought for extradition. Bonn officials indicated West Germany would decide this week on a possible extradition request as Daoud, a PLO member, was arrested while visiting Paris with a PLO delegation. Israel and Algeria and Iraq react to the arrest amid regional tensions.
