Mujibur Rahman returns to Dhaka amid jubilant homecoming

Bangladesh President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman arrived at Tejgaon Airport in Dhaka aboard an RAF Comet from New Delhi. He pledged that all ties with Pakistan are swapped for good and urged unity as he takes over after nine months abroad. He thanked India for supporting Bangladesh’s freedom and urged protection for Bengali and non Bengali residents alike.

Experts, reporters agree voice on Hughes call matches Howard Hughes

In Los Angeles a panel of seven newsmen and two voice identifications experts concluded the voice on the telephone was Howard Hughes. Lawrence Kersta compared tapes to Hughes 1947 Senate testimony, saying the voices are the same. All seven reporters asserted they knew Hughes by voice.

Youth turns theft into $75,000 luxury vacation

Cincinnati detective says 19 year old John J. Irwin Jr faced charges for defrauding two banks and embezzling about $2,000 to fund a six month trip across seven southeastern states plus the Bahamas. He provided hotel receipts and keys to support his claims of chartered planes, limousines, and luxury stays. The quest began with stolen checks, a $1,200 Jamaica hotel bill, and a $2,000 motorcycle purchase in Florida followed by a sale for $800.

Humphrey declares Democratic bid pledging to expose Nixon failures

Hubert H. Humphrey announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in Philadelphia saying his campaign will focus on the Nixon administration’s failures. He urged an end to the Vietnam War with a cease fire and troop withdrawal, and outlined goals on jobs, crime, drugs, housing, education, and urban renewal.

Vermilion man killed in Route 6 crash near Risden Road

Norman G. Berga a 38 year old Vermilion father of three died after his car failed to negotiate a curve on Routes 6 and 2 veering left of center and striking a tree. His wife Merna 32 was hurt with bruises while a passenger. The crash occurred early yesterday with road conditions described as normal. Berga a Newport native had lived in Vermilion 11 years and worked at Ford Lorain Assembly Plant.
