In a Wednesday ruling the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals allowed General Motors to modify or end lifetime health care benefits for 84,000 salaried retirees. Elyria based retiree Robert Wilhelm, a 69 year old former Fisher Guide plant engineer who retired in May 1988, says the deal promised free lifetime benefits and fears loss of coverage. Retirees who left GM between 1974 and 1988 had sued in 1989 under ERISA, but the court rejected claims that GM violated promises to provide free life time medical coverage.
Two of three Lorain county commissioners Betty Blair and Michael Ross agreed to co sign a state loan of 2 million for a 10 year old rail line between Wellington and Lorain, backing Lake Shore Railway. They delayed final vote to review an engineering study and financial analysis as Mary Jo Vasi opposes county financing.
