County janitor's execution stalled
Lorain County janitor John Simko Jr. was condemned to death for kidnapping and killing his former girlfriend Mary Jane Johnson at Darling Elementary School. The Ohio Supreme Court postponed his execution until at least April 17 with possible further delays if appeals continue.

Merchant shot self in self defense claim in Elyria trial

An OSHA investigator examined the LTV Steel Tubular Products plant after machinist James Meschke died from head injuries while operating a metal lathe. Coroner says sleeve or arm caught in machine. Westlake police closed a section of Crocker Road for about two hours after a snowplow cracked a Columbia Gas regulator causing a natural gas leak. Firefighters and officers diverted traffic while Columbia Gas shut off the line and prepared repairs near the Holiday Inn. The road reopened before 8 a.m.
