Steinway Hall Through the Years in New York
The original Steinway Hall opened in 1866 in lower Manhattan with showrooms and a 2000 seat auditorium. The New York Philharmonic performed there until Carnegie Hall opened in 1891. The current Steinway Hall opened in 1925 in the same block as Carnegie Hall and marks its 70th birthday this year. Upstairs display memorabilia and pianos for sale while downstairs rent pianos for concert artists. Each handmade Steinway piano is voiced differently, leading to piano music often heard in the basement as pianists test instruments.

Pelson to leave AT&T amid reintegration push in 1996
Pelson plans to exit AT&T as chairman of global operations in early 1996 amid a push to reassemble the Bell system. He casts the move as part of a broader shift toward vertical integration, one stop shopping on a single bill with cable TV internet and phone services. Analysts note AT&T’s return to local service while job insecurity rises for workers as the company splits and consolidates.
