Soil Improvement Pays Off For Northeastern Ohio Farms

Ohio State University economists report that farms in northeastern Ohio using gradual soil improvement earned much higher labor income than those with depleted soil. Higher lime and fertilizer use and clover pasture boosted yields, livestock, and feed, with best results at 10.9 tons lime 5 tons fertilizer and 420 tons manure per 100 rotated acres yearly.

Winter Work In Farm Woodland Pays Dividends

Ohio forester K D McClintick urges winter woodland work as a productive farm enterprise. Culling undesired trees like ironwood birch and hickory frees space and moisture for valuable species. Use defective trees for repair lumber and stockpiling. Selling mature or decaying trees also profits. Keeping woodlands with fencing and pasture improves farm animal grazing.

Silage Handling in Cold Weather Advised by Agronomist

Charles F. Rogers of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station warns farmers to use silage quickly during extreme cold to limit frost. He recommends mixing frozen with interior warm portions, keeping silage in large chunks, and shaping surfaces away from walls to reduce deep edge freezing. A trench should be formed by pulling a fork between silo and silage, and straw or shavings placed around the wall to slow freezing.
