Shock ing death of Heman Phipps at West River Road

Heman Phipps, living on West River Road, died Tuesday evening by a self-inflicted shotgun wound in the left side. The incident, likely while shooting rats, was witnessed as a sudden, single act. The coroner noted the shot entry between ribs and abdomen with a downward path, and the muzzle close enough to ignite clothing. Family recalls his gloomy nature but no prior signs of mental derangement, and recent weeks included his daughter Edith’s marriage to Dr. Wood of Lorain. He had planned for a trip to Lorain to help with her goods and was emotionally distressed by her departure. The exact motive remains unclear.
