New Year's victim tied to Appalachian tragedy
Tanya Kennedy, 24, of Lorain, was found asphyxiated on New Year’s Day and buried on a Bartley ridge. McDowell County tales of poverty and coal-town decay frame the loss, with residents, including Rev. Roger Woods, noting long mine work and the decline of jobs as drivers of hardship. Suspect Shawn Kelley, 27, faces related charges. Kennedy had moved from Bartley-Caretta area to Cleveland a year earlier to pursue nursing.
