Credit Card Nation and the American debt spike
The piece traces debt growth to the 1980s when banks expanded credit to more borrowers and optimism rose that a better living standard was attainable. It notes $735 billion in credit card debt nationally, about $7,000 per household, and that 40 percent pay balances in full. It profiles shoppers, savers, and individuals like Kristeen Mahler, who used shopping to cope with trauma and pursued counseling to manage debts. Mortgage refinancing from 2001 to 2003 allegedly funded debt repayment.

Debt growth slows as homeowners tap cash, but debts risk future shock
Mark Zandi notes card debt growth has slowed as homeowners extract cash, yet lower income families struggle without refinancing. Bankruptcies exceed 1 million annually since 1996, reaching 1.54 million in 2002. 2.25 million filings occurred in the first nine months of 2003, possibly setting a yearly record. Analysts debate effects on the economy while debt sustains spending, though Greenspan says debt is not a near term concern. Experts warn debt could become a ticking time bomb if rates rise or a recession hits.
