Libya declared state of war amid U S naval tensions

Libyan leader Muammar Khadafy warned Libya would respond to any U S attack with strikes inside America as he announced the country was on full military alert. He claimed the United States mobilized about 40 warships off Libya, a claim Pentagon officials disputed. The confrontation followed U S accusations that Libya aided Palestinian gunmen blamed for airport raids that killed 19 people, including five Americans, in Rome and Vienna on December 27.

Vermilion Man Shot Dead on Cummings Road

A Vermilion man was fatally shot at 387 Cummings Road. Lorain County Coroner Dr. William E. Kishman was called to the scene to investigate. Police declined to identify the victim or number of suspects. A resident heard a scanner mention a 26 year old woman as the shooter.

Avon man faces murder charges over parents' stabbing

Gregory DeChant, 21, of Avon, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder for the August 31 slaying of his parents on Case Road. His lawyers plan to suppress a polygraph test, arguing improper waiver and questioned methods. A Feb. 18 hearing is set on pretrial motions. DeChant attended classes at Cleveland State University while proceedings continue.

Lorain workers vote to strike if talks fail tonight

City employees in Lorain voted Sunday to take action up to a midnight strike amid ongoing contract talks. Negotiators for the city and United Steelworkers Local 6621 meet tonight to update the council as a news blackout limits comments. Union president Sid Saltz baugh said 64 to 65 percent of the 200-member union attended, and the group will return to bargaining with possible strike action. Mayor Glejko has contingency plans but offered no details. Police and firefighters continue working without a contract since December 31.

Cops storm Iowa prison frees seven officers

Five assault teams stormed the maximum security cellhouse at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison and freed seven corrections officers who had been held hostage for about an hour and a half. Three inmates and one officer were injured lightly. The prison was placed under control and inmates locked up as officials investigate the uprising and its motive.

Death of Kimberly Jo Lands on a Principle of Heartbreak and Lawsuits

In Amherst, 15 year old Kimberly Jo Landon died of acute diabetes on January 18 1978 at St Joseph Hospital. Her parents Howard and Audrey Landon pursued a wrongful death suit against Dr Eugene Socha winning 41712 in 1983 and an additional 485000 in the following year. The couple have yet to receive the second award as Socha s self insurance plan fights the payout. The piece notes rising medical liability costs and insurance premiums for Ohio physicians with projections of larger lawsuits, while the Landons frame the case as about principle rather than money.
