The 1926 Elyria City Council, sworn in last night, organized and formed its committee structure. George F. Stark, the only veteran member, was named Chairman of the Finance Committee as the council began its term and set to work on its first official actions.
A blaze fed by hundreds of gallons of alcohol swept through the C. W. Beggs and Sony perfume factory in Chicago, forcing 150 families from their homes and damaging two houses on either side. High winds spread sparks to nearby roofs, hindering firefighting efforts as the fire destroyed a large quantity of alcohol and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
New York suffers daylong fog that blankets 260 miles to sea and halts trans Atlantic shipping. Liners carrying 2,500 passengers are overdue at quarantine. Cunarder Fengaria, due yesterday with 1,000 aboard, not expected until later. Kroonland Iroquois City of Chattanooga among others awaiting improved visibility. Tug and barge collisions occur as New Long Island steamers bound for New York anchor offshore. Metropolitan area delays affect thousands of workers reaching their destinations. This is the fifth day of fog.

She reports life worth living and plans rest before returning to theater. several offers await after leaving recovery. Also Lorain mill incident injures worker Mike Tomko when pine truck falls, causing leg fractures and hospitalization.
Flowers were presented to Anna Kennedy and Ida Wingard as they joined the City Council, received from the Lorain County WCTU. Nellie Hill, the president, presented the potted plants and wished them success in their new duties while C. J. Miller distributed cigars to the men.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously approved U S participation in the Geneva preliminary conference to draft an Agenda for a disarmament conference under the League of Nations. It recommended a 50 000 appropriation to cover American delegates expenses. The measure does not commit the U S to attend the main conference. attendance would depend on Geneva Agenda.
Joe Bodner was questioned by police this morning to establish his identity as one of three men who held up and chloroformed Arthur Damm weeks ago to obtain a large sum of money Damm had hidden in his galosh. Damm partially identified him. Bodner’s picture was singled out yesterday and he faces further questioning this afternoon. He denies any connection with the robbery.
Six property owners sign a formal protest to the council clerk disputing the White Way assessment as unjust illegal and inequitable. They allege the levy was not based on foot frontage and rests on an illegal contract. The protest was referred to the Lighting Committee.
In Lorain on Jan 6 an epidemic of crime left two safes opened and a burglary on a four story home. Thieves stole checks worth 21000 from the school office safe, third robbery in two years. Loot also included 20 from Lorain Fruit Association, 11 cash and 65 in goods from Lorain Rochdale Company. A lone burglar, 35, 5 ft 6 in, 185 pounds, light complexion, took two suits, a watch and chain from Clarence Pierce's home.
A Federal Grand Jury in Columbus returned indictments against more than two Ohioans in what agents call the state's largest liquor conspiracy. The probe exposes a 20 million dollar ring with activities tied to Cleveland and Columbus and reaching to Detroit. A separate report from Baltimore says the Norwegian steamer Halse sent a distress wireless but was continuing under its own power.
Brookhart of Iowa objects to the Senate recount in Washington claiming 30,000 ballots were received unsealed across seven precincts. Jed G. Mitchell, counsel for Brookhart, filed the objection with the Senate elections committee. The move targets potential tampering in the Brookhart-Stee contest context.
Washington reports reveal widespread smuggling of aliens entering the United States via Cuba and Western Florida. An organized underground system moves a constant stream northward, with suppression of trammel as a goal of a potential non smuggling treaty with Cuba.
Atlantic City dispatch reports composer Irving Berlin and his bride Ellin Mackay plan to return to New York to meet Ellin’s father Clarence Mackay, head of the Postal Telegraph company. Mackay opposes the marriage, threatens to cut her from the estate, and claims he will never forgive or forget. The couple’s future hinges on acceptance by Ellin’s father.

No word has reached authorities about an army balloon that departed Leningrad on January 2 with four men aboard. The craft is believed to have drifted into northern Russia, possibly beyond the Arctic circle toward the pole. The balloon was piloted by M. Kyriloff, head of the Military aeronautic school.
Washington dispatch quotes John V. A. MacMurray, U S minister at Peking, warning that a civil war in China is imminent amid four defined politico military zones. He notes danger along the Hupeh Henan and Chihli Shantung border with a possible Gem advance south of the Great Wall appearing unlikely.
A ten year old boy named Anthony Toblash, who lives at 7 Massey Avenue, left for school as usual on Tuesday morning and did not return home that night. His mother appealed for help from the public on Wednesday, describing his clothing and asking for information to locate him.
In Columbus Ohio officials said a full year may pass before a definite decision on Logan Gas Company’s rate increase. After hearings resume, protesting cities will have 60 to 90 days to review evidence. The case affects 72 municipalities and faces protests. another Logan application remains pending.
A black man nicknamed Sonny Cook fired four shots at Ruby Price on West Long Street, killing her at the paint company steps. He then reportedly wounded himself with a self-inflicted bullet. Police suspect another man, John Henry Payne, as a Tennessee fugitive in the case.
New York January six prospects for a rapid settlement of the 158000 anthracite miners strike dimmed as talks in New York City neared ten days without progress. Sheriff Underhill arrested Paul Buchasick of Cleveland for driving while intoxicated and Paul Gurshak of Cleveland for intoxication near South Amherst. Gurshak fined $25 and costs, Buchasick fined $30 and costs plus 30 days in jail. In Newark, Mrs. Margaret Long was elected president of the township board of education, the first woman to hold the post.
Geneva Jan 6 Germany will make formal application to join the League of Nations at week’s end and the league secretariat is expected to summon an extraordinary session in March to receive Germany as a member.
A heated courtroom exchange occurred between Judge A. Ti. Webber and attorney TL. EL Fanver as The American Shovel & Stamping Co. faced The Elgrity Savings & Trust Co. The defendant asked for a continuance due to a Cleveland attorney’s absence, a request denied after multiple delays. The case involved a mortgage for 956,000 and related payables.
