Oberlin air traffic controllers seek AFGE union election

Oberlin Air Traffic Controllers at the Cleveland Center will petition the National Labor Relations Board for an election to decide union support under the American Federation of Government Employees. About 30 percent have signed for an election. 280 controllers may join AFGE if a majority vote yes. Programs await an NLRB decision mid March on local regional or national organizing level.

Soviet Physicist Kulikov Granted U S Asylum

A top Soviet high energy physicist Artem Vladimirovich Kulikov, 51, was granted political asylum in the United States after requesting asylum at O Hare International Airport Chicago following a three month exchange stint at Fermilab near Batavia Illinois He is cited as the first Soviet high energy physicist to defect in this manner Kulikov a senior physicist and chief engineer at the Leningrad Institute of Nuclear Physics worked with three colleagues at Fermilab and is described as well known and highly respected The State Department confirmed the asylum while noting standard procedures to reassure the Soviets that defections are voluntary His wife remains in the Soviet Union and their daughter died in a traffic accident two years ago Details note a possible change in weather on the region’s page.

City moves to close Elyria after hours bar raid

Elyria seeks a judge to declare the H O U R S Club at 229 Temple Court a public nuisance and shutter it for at least a year. Richard Collins and wife Rita are named in the complaint filed in Lorain County Common Pleas Court. Police and liquor control agents raided the H O U R S Club and the M B E Club early Nov. 17, arresting 33 people on various charges. Collins faces charges of possession of criminal tools and running an illegal liquor operation while Rita Collins is charged with aiding and abetting a place where alcohol is illegally sold. An agent cited purchases of $3 beer tickets on Nov. 4 and 10.
