Filibuster delays Senate action on Bilbo seating
Today’s session focused on the Bilbo issue as filibuster rules blocked seating. Hatch pressed for formal charges against Bilbo and an opportunity for reply while Taft urged delaying final seating until the Senate is organized. A mixed vote favored moving to bar Bilbo, with Taft warning of rule changes if the abuse continues. The House prepared for business as the Senate wrestled with organization and Truman’s address plans remained contingent on Senate action.

Clarifies Remarks About Western Union Co
Washington FCC Commissioner Clif ford J. Durr said his recent remarks about Western Union concerned not its survival but the prospect of a nationwide communications service. He noted the 1943 Postal Western Union merger led to contraction in telegraph availability and that rates have risen three times in months, based on Western Union’s finances rather than reasonableness.
