Burundi's army sealed off a military base and nearby village after a Hutu rebel assault. The toll reached as many as 300 dead, including up to 200 civilians, with the attack triggering a major security response across the region.
Vermilion Democrat Alan Zaleski says he will not seek re election after 16 years in the Ohio Senate. He cites time for new blood and more time with family, noting a 250 mile Columbus commute and a political climate he calls nastier. He will finish his term and consider private sector options.
Elyria police say Elyria man Ray Smith Jr. offered a tipoff response when questioned about Angela Gallo’s death. They found the 20 year old’s body in the trunk of her car at EMH Regional Medical Center. Judge John Musson ruled there is enough evidence to proceed.
Juan Gabriel Solis Aguirre 21 pleads guilty via interpreter to seven counts including involuntary manslaughter vehicular homicide and DUI for a September fatal crash on Route 57. Holly Fate 48 of Elyria died after he drove in the wrong lane. He faces over five years in prison, license revocation, and eventual deportation to Mexico.
Daniel H. Zirzow a 26 year old Democrat at large was chosen as North Ridgeville council president at the organizational meeting with a 5 0 vote. He succeeds Roseanne Johnson who did not seek re election. Zirzow was first elected at age 20 and had left office for two terms before returning to win the seat again.
Kennedys Shrivers Lawfords Cuomos and other relatives gathered at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport Massachusetts to pay last respects to Michael Kennedy 39 son of Senator Robert F Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. He died after a New Year’s Eve ski football crash in Aspen Colorado. Attending were Rep. Joseph P Kennedy Robert F Kennedy Jr Ethel Kennedy and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
