Pilla Set To Be Cleveland's Ninth Catholic Bishop
The Rev Anthony M Pilla will be installed Tuesday as the ninth bishop of the Cleveland Diocese succeeding Archbishop Hickey He says he wanted only to be a parish priest and has no ambition for higher office He plans to listen to people and work with clergy to form a shared vision while avoiding political involvement and voting blocks He supports church laws on priestly celibacy and abortion opposition and notes continued discussion on women's ordination He is a Cleveland native and first generation American with a long career in educating priests and leading church services in Lake Geauga and eastern Cuyahoga counties He learned of his appointment at a Washington meeting and says he would be delighted to return to parish duties if asked.
