FBI data show undercount of anti Asian hate crimes in 2022
The FBI reported 11 613 total hate crimes in 2022 up from 10 875 in 2021 with a 33 percent drop in anti Asian incidents from 2021. Advocates say lower reporting masks persistent prejudice and that many incidents do not meet legal hate crime definitions. FBI spokesperson Katherine Chaumont notes many incidents involve offensive language and are not tracked as hate crimes.
