Floods and quakes shape Elyria's 1883 disaster year
The 1883 Elyria area endured a January quake at 8:30 a.m. followed by a flood of the century in February. The Black River swelled, bridges and rails were damaged, homes and cattle lost, and Lyra worship of the new Lorain County Historical Society began with a meeting led by Mayor Gates and Prof Frederick Reely.
