Chicago chief investigator Pat Roche announced the arrest of 59 members of a kidnap ring, including 13 women, linked to 17 abductions across Illinois, Peoria and St. Louis. Five captives confessed. no one jailed yet as names stay secret while trials are prepared.
A large order for high grade golf balls was placed by a nationally known Midwestern buyer. Worthington Ball Co president KR Jenson said the deal will keep the Worthington Rail Company operating at capacity in the first quarter of 1982 amid strong inquiries and optimistic outlook.
Japanese forces under Gen Jiro Tamon entered Chinchow in Manchuria at 6 am after Chinese retreat. Commanders aim to push toward the Great Wall and force all Chinese troops from Manchuria, following the evacuation of Chinchow by Chang Hsenh-Liang’s forces.
A severe storm across Ontario caused snow sleet and rain with high winds isolating towns from Hamilton to Windsor. The Niagara fruit belt suffered heavy damage while Toronto lost power as wires snapped. Roads became nearly impassable and Bell officials estimated 300000 dollars in damage to communications cables and lines.

In Ohio near Gates Mills an auto skid and overturned killing two young people, Miss Elva Williamson 19 of Bedford and Merle Gleason 22 of Northfield. A third passenger Mrs Edna Scruton 21 of Gates Mills was critically injured.
General Ger ald Pau, renowned for his World War leadership, died at his Paris home today aged 83. The passing of the veteran officer marks the end of a storied military career and long public life.
An old Huntington landmark hotel, the Huntington Inn, burned to the ground in Huntington, Ohio. The blaze started around a chimney and was discovered about 3 A M. The Wellington Fire Department arrived too late to save the structure, which had housed a home for W A Sisler and family after years as a hotel on a stagecoach route.
United Press reports a New Year holiday surge in violent deaths nationwide. Auto accidents caused the largest losses, with over 150 deaths blamed on weather and liquor. a Chicago river plunge killed nine, plus other fatal crashes, shootings, poison liquor, falls on ice, and suicides. Illinois led with over 30 fatalities.
Police revolver teams competed with high scores led by Ser geant Curtis Hamlin 52 Waldron 52 Miller 52 Gibson 50 Olmstead 49 Johnson 46. Winners will buy lunch for the losers next regular shoot and will face Dutch Swanker’s team January 5 at 7 p.m.
Lee Schuster of 412 Lorain Blvd suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg after drawing a .32 caliber revolver from his pocket. Police say the weapon was accidentally discharged during New Year’s celebrations less than an hour after an earlier shooting incident.
Major W. W. Lemmond of the Judge Advocate General’s office in Washington shot himself today as three men struggled to stop him. The incident occurred in the capital with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Radio intercepts show 45 Japanese sailors were rescued from the Tamaho Maru south of the Pribiloff Islands by the Reigo Maru after high seas opened its hull. The ship was left to founder as SOS calls were sent earlier in the week. Hakuban Maru and Taskuha Maru joined in the rescue effort.
Mayor W H VanOster was inaugurated in Elyria city hall amid a formal council chamber ceremony. He pledged to seek citizen cooperation to improve Elyria, citing guidance from God as core to his leadership and expressing intent to make Elyria the best city in the United States with public support.
In Decliff, 14 miles west, Green C. Miller a 74 year old general storekeeper was shot and killed during a holdup. Miller and his wife had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 21. Edward Smith witnessed the incident as two armed bandits fled after firing four shots. Deputies and Erie railroad detectives conducted a night search between Marion and Decliff.
A honeysuckle vine in Alliance Ohio bloomed today at the home of former Councilman D. D. Davis, a plant that normally flowers in April or May.
Senate finance committee report shows Wall Street firms including J P Morgan National City Kuhn Loeb earned vast spreads from selling foreign bonds. Estimated total bonds floated near 5.89 billion with spreads around 196.5 million, sparking possible curbs and tax legislation.

At Waterloo near Ironton a New Year’s Eve party ended when the cave roof collapsed. Samuel Cooper aged 63 Amos Woodlum 36 and Paris Cooper 35 were killed. Roy Woodlum 4 and John Woodlum 21 were injured as rock and earth tumbled down after a fire dried the roof.
Three robbers struck the Waterville Savings Bank Company in Toledo on January 2 and escaped with about $4,000. A posse chased a car eastward after witnesses saw the getaway vehicle. Richard Reddish assistant cashier was confronted by two well dressed men who demanded change and forced entry to the vault.
At noon in Cleveland four radio stations carried acting Mayor Harold H. Burton’s New Year message as factory whistles, bells, and car horns sounded to drown the sounds of depression. The Cleveland Civic Board organized the noise barrage across Greater Cleveland.
