Elyria Fire Department Reports 1970 Losses and Plans
The 1970 Elyria fire year claimed one life and injured 19, with property damage around 476 716. A major blaze at Ely Stadium caused the largest single loss, while 60 percent of losses came from about ten fires. Fire department calls fell from 853 in 1969 to 731 through November 1970. Defective electrical equipment and matches were leading causes. The department added six new firefighters in mid November and promoted Dean Wells to lieutenant. City council considered a nine position staffing increase and approved purchases including a snorkel truck and a 1000 gpm pumper slated for delivery by mid year. Chief Scott envisions six stations and a municipal alarm system.
