North Vietnamese troops have dug zigzag trenches within about 100 yards of the U S Marine base at Khe Sanh. UPI reports 6 000 Marines surrounded by an estimated 16 000 NVA as fighting continues around the central highlands and Saigon area with renewed rocket and air attacks.
Paris reports France has secured from Hanoi an unconditional halt of American air raids as a necessary step toward Vietnam peace talks. The statement followed a cabinet meeting led by President de Gaulle and echoed Thant’s warning that delays risk global peace. Mai Van Bo remains Hanoi’s main Western conduit.
