Home and durable goods fall as tax law bites
Resales of existing homes and orders for durable goods plunged in January with the new tax law blamed. Existing home sales dropped 14.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.47 million, the steepest monthly drop since 1968, though year over year they rose 4.2 percent. Durable goods orders tumbled 75 percent to 102.11 billion amid weak activity, with defense demand offsetting some declines. Senators signaled action to aid Farm Credit System, which posted a loss of 1.9 billion last year and faces estimates up to 8 billion to restore health, as they moved to have legislation ready by the Easter recess.
