First Atomic Cannon Test Predicted in Nevada
Washington reports that the 85 ton atomic cannon would fire the world first atomic artillery shell this spring at the Nevada Proving Ground beginning March 17 as part of a large atomic Maneuvers exercise involving about 20 000 troops across all services. The initial test will be a civil defense demonstration and likely not public. The shell will be fired remotely at first to avoid premature detonation with later shots conducted from normal gun crews. The Army plans to use high explosive propellant and has at least 10 of the cannons, capable of 20 mile range in any weather. General James H. Van Fleet says the weapon could aid against Chinese Communists.
