The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 0.3 percent rise in the consumer price index from mid December to mid January, led by coffee and pork price increases. Despite gains, auto and equipment workers lose half of a prior 2 cent hourly wage rise effective March 1, as October levels were not surpassed.
County commissioners approved higher dental fees for indigent care aligning with Ohio Industrial Commission limits. Single extractions rise to five dollars, general anaesthesia to fifteen, local anaesthesia to five, single surface cavities to four, multi surface cavities to ten, and a set of false teeth jumps from one hundred to one hundred fifty dollars.
A swarm of worms declared war on South Africa's maize crop threatening the nation's harvest. Authorities report the pests nearly overran a DDT factory in Johannesburg where large quantities of pesticide are produced daily to combat the invasion.

Beir ut cables report Syrian rebels who toppled President Shishekly favor restoring former premier Marouf Dawalibi to power. Provisional leadership talks center on Hasim Al Atassi as temporary president while Dawalibi would become premier with expanded powers. Shishekly fled to the Saudi embassy in Beirut and seeks exile in Europe.
A major snow event that buried Iowa under as much as 23 inches moved east into the Ohio Valley, with 2 to 5 inches expected in a narrow band across northern Illinois Indiana Michigan and Ohio. Dust storms lingered in the western Plains while other regions saw varied weather.
State Highway Patrolmen from five barracks joined in a search for a light single engine airplane lost over the Wellington area. Lorain barracks were alerted by Rochester mayor around 3 p.m. as the plane circled the village. Despite spotlights, borrowed lighting, and a proposed landing field on Route 18, low ceilings and heavy snow prevented contact. The plane, heard but unseen, circled for over four hours and then headed northeast before disappearing. Patrols remained overnight without locating the craft.
Lorain residents Elsa Kindleberger and Meta Sprague became the first mother and daughter duo selected to serve on the same jury in Judge D A Cook’s 19 year tenure. They were chosen for a suit against the Ohio Industrial Commission filed by Leonard Samuels of Barnesville after a September 1948 unloading incident at Miller Coal Co. The case settled before deliberations. Lost: Black English cocker with grey muzzle. Reward. Ph 2492.
Florian Schweller, former Town Tavern owner, was found guilty in Mayor Ralph Gray's court of violating village liquor sale entry rules by admitting non license holders on Sunday. He was fined 25 dollars plus costs. The case traces to 1950 arrests for selling to black list names and allowing non licensees in the business. Various court rulings upheld challenges and drew state attention over ordinance validity.
London reports the Very Rev W R Inge known as the gloomy dean of St Pauls died today at age 93 from tronchitis. Though aged and frail he remained mentally alert and earned the nickname for his prophecies of a coming dark age. He said his reputation came from telling the truth as he saw it.
The Lake Erie Watershed Conservation Foundation members addressed tapping the Great Lakes to supply inland Ohio areas. They met other water conservation officials at a session of the Ohio Planning Conference. A separate note announces a Saturday night dance at 8 p.m. with music by Marge Prindle at La Grange School.
Petitions bearing 245 signatures asked the Carlisle Township Zoning Commission to deny a zoning change for a WEOL Elyria-Lorain Broadcasting Co TV station on Indian Hollow Road. About 50 residents attended, mostly opposing the change for fear of setting a precedent, while others questioned the project’s impact but not the station itself.
County Commissioner J Norman Thompson refused to back a plan by J Powell Jones and Oscar Dunn to grant 300 tons of slag to each township. He urged the engineer and commissioners to assess need and funding first. Examples cited included a township grant leaving an $8,000 balance. Townships requesting slag ranged from 300 to 2,000 tons. Thompson voted against granting without verification.
Washington AP Senate leaders foresee a final settlement of the Bricker Amendment by nightfall after a month of debate. Senator George’s substitute offers that international agreements other than treaties require congressional legislation to become domestic law, with two thirds vote needed for final approval.
French led forces battled Communist positions along a 250 mile Indochina coastal plain from Hue to Saigon during a lull in the interior fight. French columns eyed Song Cau port as American B 26 bombers and Bearcat fighters strafed targets between Hue and Quang Ngai 80 miles south.
London report says a small anti communist group regularly smuggles underground agents into the Soviet Union. Some have been executed, the alliance claims, as it prepares for an uprising. They press propaganda along the Iron Curtain perimeter and cite leaflets found with repatriated German POWs. The group asserts unknown numbers have entered Russia by simple means rather than parachuting.
Gen. O P Weyland, commander of the U S Far East Air Forces, says Japan must give top priority to air defense as Communist powers hold about 6 500 planes within striking distance. He notes Japan’s defense budget allocates little to its embryonic air force and cites a pending U S Japan aid agreement and expanding ground forces.
Seven Elyria Draft Board registrants inducted into the Army in Cleveland include John Jackson Glover Jr. at Elyria addresses and James Arthur Monagon, John Joseph Walker, Howard Staniey Washington, Allen Charles Whitehill, with Floyd Leslie Smith inducted by a New York City board. The Elyma Draft Board No. 72 list notes January 12, 1934 as the induction date.
Two FS6 Sabrejets collided in flight near Seoul Korea. Both pilots bailed out safely and landed. They introduced themselves on the ground claiming ranks and towns Thomas C. Smith from Lawson Missouri and Thomas E. Smith from Stillwater Oklahoma.
Sidney Walker twenty one from London revealed to Britain's Labour Ministry that she is a woman after presenting pinup pictures from a beauty queen contest. Officials had planned to draft her into the army but dropped the plan once her gender was confirmed.
Washington report on McCarthy Stevens dispute shows White House split over assurances given to Army witnesses and the meaning of an informal understanding. McCarthy counters that Stevens distorted the memorandum of understanding while Mundt and Potter offer cautious support.
