Elyria firefighters say a baby sitter rescued five children aged 8 months to 4 years from a fire allegedly started by a 4 year old with a lighter in a two story home on West Avenue. The blaze caused about 10 000 in damage but no injuries were reported. The Red Cross assists the family.
Elyria’s crossing guard program, staffed by mostly retired locals at 42 sites, may continue with $75 000 from the city but faces a potential shutdown in its current form next school year. The police department administers the program with shared costs, yet a looming general fund cut prompts the city to consider severing the agreement and Elyria Schools to fund future costs, possibly reducing sites or contracting out while ensuring children’s safety.
Police will present their case to a grand jury soon. Manns will serve three years in prison after being sentenced Monday for the 2007 escape from the Lorain Medina Community Based Correctional Facility and a three hour police standoff.
