Court pick denies link to syphilis study
Washington Friday raised new questions about Henry Foster Jr. and his awareness of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study while he led obstetrics at a Tuskeegee hospital. Foster said he first learned of the study in 1979 and would have acted in 1972, as opposed to earlier, per a White House statement. The dispute arose after Gary Bauer circulated excerpts from a 1981 book claiming a local medical society board briefed the Public Health Service in 1969. A county medical society secretary said the group had no jurisdiction over the project.
