Coal pact ratification faces tough path for miners

President Carter announced a coal strike accord after lengthy negotiations. The 160,000 miners covered by the pact face a 10 day reading period and a tight ratification vote. UMW President Arnold Miller called it a good contract but warned support is not unanimous. Slain couple found amid drugs at Strongsville home

Police traced a line problem Friday to 10391 Prospect Rd and found Kim S. Shasta, 23, and a 26-year-old man shot in the head. Drugs including marijuana LSD and cocaine were found inside the house. There was no weapon or sign of struggle. The victims, locals of Parma area, had rented the home for two years and were last seen about a week earlier. Residents described them as quiet and private.

Six Die In Tenn Explosion And Evacuations Ordered

About 2,000 residents were told to evacuate as officials weighed draining a derailed propane tank car after a blast in Waverly Tennessee. Six killed and more than 50 injured. Identified victims include Lloyd Florow Melvin W Matlock and Wilber York fire chief. Authorities warned of potential further risk as debris and possible additional blasts lingered.

Train slams truck in Argentina killing at least 50

A passenger train derailed after colliding with a truck at an unguarded crossing 300 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, leaving at least 50 dead and many injured. Police reported 10 cars derailed as the Star of the North train traveled from Tucuman Province toward Buenos Aires.

Carlisle Township man kills wife in Elyria home

Joyce Hall, 41, was killed and her husband Willie Hall, 46, wounded in a Friday shooting at 41933 Cooper Street, Carlisle Township. Deputies arrived as the couple’s stepson and his wife were forced to drive Hall to Joyce Hall’s workplace. Investigators say no charges have been filed yet and the case remains under review by Det. Ralph Gale.

Papp Refuses Doctor After Hallucinations At Jail

Timothy Papp sparked a Friday night jail scene by claiming hallucinations and a need for hypnotic help. Attorney Charles Adams stayed with him for hours, while Prosecutor Joseph Grunda announced he would personally lead the trial set for March 13 in Akron. Medical and hypnosis experts from Columbus and Lorain County gathered, but Grunda’s team objected to further hypnosis without medical examination. Sheriff deputies reported Papp later said he was OK.
