The United States announced a five year agreement to arm Britain with 1500 mile range nuclear missiles to defend the free world against a possible surprise Soviet attack.
The United States and Britain signed a secret pact to base 60 Thor and Jupiter missiles in the UK with four bases costing 9 million dollars, warheads under U S jurisdiction and joint veto on use. The agreement follows Bermuda talks and aims to deter a Soviet nuclear strike. Heavy rains hit Texas flooding sections from the weekend, with at least 13 weather related deaths reported nationwide as warm weather returns to parts of the country.
In Washington President Eisenhower plans to abolish the White House disarmament office once led by Harold E. Stassen, shifting arms policy to Secretary John Foster Dulles. Dulles may delegate day to day disarmament tasks to Philip J. Farley, who has run State Department efforts for months.

Eighteen cars of a triple headed 87 car freight train bound from Columbus to Cleveland derail at 3 15 a m on the New York Central Railroad near Rt 57 in Grafton Ohio. No injuries are reported. Crews from Collinwood Foresthune and Beltfontaine work to clear two main tracks with three cranes. Cause unknown. Coal spills onto the tracks but no road crossings are blocked and service resumes on an auxiliary track at about 45 mph.
Washington reports that Russia exploded a large nuclear device on Sunday with megaton yield. Japan suggested a hydrogen bomb design, possibly space based to limit fallout. The United States, facing global pressure, seeks a cleaner H-bomb with minimal surface radiation.
A 33 year old Vermilion man and father of four was killed when his 1946 Dodge struck the westbound Nickel Plate freight train at the Coen crossing at about 1 51 p m Saturday. The crossing is guarded by crossarm posts and train crewmen learned of the crash from state patrol. The car was carried about 50 feet down the tracks. The Erie County Sheriff's Department investigated and identified the victim as Robert Raines of Coen Road R D 2 Vermilion.
In Cambridge City Indiana rescuers freed 42 year old Wilbur Harold trapped eight hours after a well cave in buried him to the armpits. A spoon sized tool scooped gravel while 160 workers above kept him safe. He was given oxygen as a barrel structure sealed the shaft and one man could dig at a time.
