Your Federal ncome Tax Depreciation Allowances

The amount to be recovered by depreciation is the cost of the property if acquired after February 28, 1913. If acquired before March 1, 1913 the basis is the cost less prior depreciation or fair market value on March 1913, whichever is greater. The proper allowance is that amount set aside for the year under a consistent plan so that plus salvage value equals the cost at end of life. Depreciation for a building depends on its serviceable years, not its condemnation date. Construction year begins when usable. Buildings under construction are not depreciable. If economic or other conditions force early abandonment, a reasonable deduction for obsolescence may be allowed in addition to depreciation. No obsolescence deduction is permitted for anticipated future obsolescence.
