Ciencia, a filly, captured the $50,000 Santa Anita Derby by five lengths with a 1:50.6 mile and a half. The victory challenges expectations for fillies in spring racing and recalls the Derby history noting Regret as the only filly to win in 1915.
Anne Clymer of Elyria and his older brother Don direct the Richland County Class B scholastic basketball tournament in Mansfield. The younger Clymer is a Bluffton College graduate and teaches at a Findlay junior high. Eddie Brieitz notes in AP column with others debating sports quotes. Willis Reichard, Worthington Ball Co. VP, and family return from Florida after golf and fishing thrills. Ed Vincent recovers from rabbit fever.
Ohio high school athletics debates a rule to permit a spring football training month while delaying fall opening to September 1 if spring sessions occur. If no spring practice occurs, fall workouts could start August 20. Coaches seek a compromise, but state commissioner H R Townsend doubts passage. George Day of Elyria shines in a House League game at age over 50, playing full 30 minutes and scoring three baskets. The Thew Shovel captured last year’s Elyria Y M C A Independent basketball title. Mrs Ethel V Mars keeps 37 horses at Hot Springs with two three year olds eyed as race meeting picks at Oaklawn starting February 27.
The City A bowling second half race tightens with Haserodt Jewelers and Tarry Tavern sharing the lead, Elyria Recreation I T S and Bauer Dairy close behind. Last night Jewelers framed a key moment before Recreation joined the chase.
The Line Department rose to first place by sweeping three straight games from the Central Engineering Department as the Service Department dropped two of three to the New Business Department. Erie District also won two from Engineering. High team total was 2300 by Line Dept and 785 high single by Eng Dept. Fred Wakefield led Erie District with 587 series and 202 single.
The Steel and Tubes defeated the Fox Furnace 28 to 16 to hand the Fur nacemen their first defeat and force a tie at the top of the City Industrial League midway through the season.
Standard Cleaners of Elyria defeated Darek Meats of Lorain 37 to 30 at Jefferson Junior High. Joe Siffert led the Cleaners with 10 points, Lowell Wasem added 6, and Lucas scored 12 for Meats as the game stayed close through three periods before Elyria pulled away in the final frame.
Birmingham Firemen crushed Sandusky 75 to 49 in Birmingham last night with a strong second half scoring surge. Joe Varsa led the Firemen with 26 points while Hiss of Sandusky scored 25 as the hosts prepare for Kohlmyer Hardware of Lorain next.
The Standard Cleaners will represent the city in the 14th annual Ohio Women's Bowling Association tournament in Toledo. They begin team play tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Haggerty's Interurban Lanes, with doubles and singles Sunday at 4 p.m. Members include Betty Fackler, Rhea Miller, Margaret Henke, Helen Taylor, and Babe Valerius.
In Elyria last night the Hase rodt Jewelers lost twice to Elyria Recreation while the Tarry Tavern won two from Bauer Dairy, leaving both teams at 24 wins 12 losses. Fox Furnace and Elyria Hardware also posted wins. high team score was Elyria Recreation at 2,770 and Fox Furnace had a 996 single. Bob Huneke of Bittners led individuals with 634.
Seabiscuit withdrawn from the Santa Anita Handicap to rest and pursue a possible Summer comeback. Owner Charlies S. Howard plans retirement to Ridgewood Ranch after a return run in Hollywood Gold Cup. Two South American rivals emerge as top contenders for the Santa Anita meeting.
Elyria High fans unable to travel to East Cleveland can call 4418 after 10 o clock to hear the Elyria Shaw score. The Chronicle Telegram states only this number will answer and other CT phones will not.
Clearview leads Grafton in the opening Lorain County Class B tournament game at Graf ton High School as Eaton faces South Amherst in the nightcap. Clearview, co champion with Wellington, edged Penfield earlier. Grafton beat Avon Lake. Eaton won 14 straight. South Amherst beat Grange. Wellington vs Ridgeville follows tomorrow, with two winners advancing to the sectional at Clearview High School next week.
Elyria High meets Shaw High in the final Lake Erie League game. The Crimson quintet aims to tie for the title with a win, while Shaw can clinch outright by defeating Elyria. Lineups likely feature Fobes, Selman, Coyen, Herold, Coleman for Elyria and Reynolds, Berry, Palmer, Corbeau, Williams for Shaw.
