Officials continue to account for all crew and passengers after the Roma airship crashed at the Hampton Roads base. Thirty four bodies were recovered from the blaze and investigators seek a passenger list for the test flight from Norfolk Virginia.
United Mine Workers of America announces a nationwide referendum on an April strike. President Lewis says turnout by March 10 will decide, with demands for a six hour day five day week and wage scale preservation. He notes a conference with operators in Cleveland is unlikely.
In Newport News on February 24 a public funeral is held for the American air crusaders killed in the Roma crash. Mourners pass to St Pauls Episcopal Church where 15 victims lie in state. A military parade will honor the dead as roses are showered from bombers.
In Elyria, Mary Rose Boone bonded out on a $2,000 bond after being indicted for stealing a $1,000 note from Nicholas R Bishop. Bishop, former New York Central railroad foreman, accuses Boone of a long fraud aimed at money and jewelry, including a $1,020 engagement ring pawned for $5490.
In Delaware on Feb 24 Bucyrus defeated Elyria 17 to 5 in the first game. Millersburg beat Van Wert 21 to 15 in the second. Other scores include Ridge Township 21 Caledonia 10 Ashley 20 Richwood 10 Lima Central 18 Clycle 4 Alliance 23 Union Township 7 Jama South 9 Castalia 6 Mt Gilead 19 Plymouth 5.
In Altadena California the film star Mabel Normand was reported gravely ill, her condition described as grave and critical by doctors. A recent relapse after a nervous breakdown followed the murder of William Desmond Taylor, with strength failing during the night.
Firefighters from No 1 station responded to an overheated furnace at 233 Third Street the residence of W C Searight around 8 20 last night. No damage resulted.
The adjourned city council meeting approves a first reading of a resolution setting the city to pay 2 percent of original paving costs for streets accepted as public. Previously the city covered 32 1 3 percent plus street intersection costs. The law requires at least 2 percent, shifting more burden to residents on paving. A new policy also mandates concrete foundations for all streets, six inches for residences and eight inches for business streets.
Storm sweeping the middle west leaves at least nine dead with fears of fifteen and fifty injured as wire service reports await. The Winnipeg bound Great Northern flyer collided with a rotary snowplow near Montrose Minnesota, trapping crews under buckled engines and injuring many passengers.
Lorain officials meet with F J Ryan of the Department of Justice as he investigates a tale told by Rae Conners and Duris Dorrington, Cleveland 20 year old sisters arrested January 20 on suspicion and said they were brought to Lorain to entice local officials including Mayor Grall Chief Welker and Safety Director Gould.
Mrs. Grace Harding of Olmsted died yesterday at her mother’s home in Fields Corners Elsint. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 50 PM at the Fields church.
J Rouse, a Boone County Kentucky auto mobile dealer, died this morning from burns after starting a stove with kerosene. His wife was burned on the hands while trying to extinguish the flames.
A crowd of rescuers gathers around the U S army dirigible Roma as it burned after plunging to the earth near the Roads base. The airship dropped from the sky and burst into flames, killing thirty four crewmen. The vessel struck high electric wires igniting the gas and causing widespread fire.
Mrs. Maude Stacey, wife of Harry C Stacey, files a $20,000 case against Mrs. Bessie L Smalley claiming Smalley alienated Stacey’s affections, courted him for seven months, took him on trips, used aliases, and corresponded secretly, with a second divorce to be filed.
Leo Henke and Whitey Aamwer were tried in Lorain municipal court on assault and battery charges. Henke was found guilty and fined 25 dollars plus costs. Fauve was discharged.
Four bandits robbed Walter A Estes proprietor of the Estes Mercantile Company shortly after he left the Livestock State bank in Kansas City Mo and escaped with $8000 in cash.
Allen, president of the Crippled Children Society, urged Ohio to conduct an exhaustive survey of every county and city to care for and cure cripples. He said 12 000 injured children could be helped and about 25 percent could become self supporting with proper aid.
A garbled notice reports on estate matters in Elyria involving Thrasher and others. It mentions a person named Thrasher who deserted property and recently died, with references to leasing and sale of assets.
