Inspections to intensify at meat and poultry plants
The Agriculture Department plans a risk based inspection overhaul starting April at about 250 processing plants about 5 percent of the total. Higher risk plants with past violations face more frequent checks while safer plants see fewer visits. Critics fear hasty rollout though officials defend aims to cut illness from food poisoning. Daily inspections continue and slaughter plants are unaffected.

Passport rules relax for children crossing US borders
The Bush administration announced relaxed rules for child travelers at land and sea borders. Children 15 and under with parental consent can cross with birth certificates rather than passports, and 16 to 18 year olds traveling with groups may use birth certificates. Air travelers remain required to carry passports. The changes take effect January 2008. Chertoff announced details in Detroit.

Soldier receives 100 years for Iraqi rape and murder
Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, 24, was sentenced to 100 years in prison and dishonorable discharge for the gang rape and murder of 14 year old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi and killings of her family in Iraq. He will be eligible for parole in 10 years under a plea agreement with 101st Airborne Division.
